This composition was created from a random reference photo, so I'm unsure of the location. I altered it to express a very specific "mood." To me, this painting embodies the necessity for all of us to take time from our busy schedule, from the "work-a-day" world, and steep ourselves in intellectual or prayerful thought. I imagine myself alone on that road, everything is still and quiet, and I am contemplating higher thoughts, the ways of the natural and supernatural world I live in. Joseph Pieper, a twentieth century German Philosopher makes a compelling argument in his book Leisure: The Basis of Culture. "In our bourgeois Western world total labor has vanquished leisure. Unless we regain the art of silence and insight, the ability for nonactivity, unless we substitute true leisure for our hectic amusements, we will destroy our culture--and ourselves."

Amazing!!

This painting is beautiful...captivating. As soon as I saw it, even distorted in this email, I was captured by thoughts of what it is like to do a retreat with the Lord. HE walks this road with us, in solitude, and we are filled with great peace. So while it does appear to be a lonely road for the person viewing it...the road is not so lonely for the one walking it with Jesus.
ReplyDeleteI just bought this print at the Three Rivers Arts Festival and could not be happier with it. It is inspiring and beautiful.
